project 05: The symphony of zombie media: A collaboration

[ Enquiry ]

When all attempts to give new life have failed, how else can we connect with dead media? The Symphony of Zombie Media is a collaborative audio-visual installation that explores circuit bending as a form of resistance to planned obsolescence, constructed from a symbiotic system of recently collected discarded media. In building this installation, we explored aspects of care by giving these artefacts a second life. Our symphony presents the life cycle of a plastic solar-powered duck and our attempts to resurrect this duck with a new purpose as an audio receiver. Although the duck is dead, its ominous presence is trapped between our world and the afterlife, as it will take decades to decompose and fully return back to the soil from which it was extracted. The work was exhibited at the Science Gallery London where we left an opportunity for the audience to reflect on their relationship by writing a letter to their own dead, lost or forgotten media.
