project 02: The Dawn of Generation 404

The Dawn of Generation 404 (2024) is a video installation which acts as postinternet artefact (art that challenges the impact of the internet on culture) from a near, speculative future where the internet no longer exists. As a response to the book, Infinite Detail by Tim Maughan, I aimed to explore how dependent, oversaturated, and highly influenced we are by the internet, to the point where it feels almost inescapable. With this radical disruption, Dronegodde$$ presents us with the ‘leftovers’ as a way of critiquing the internet and reflecting on our relationship to it, aligned with the principles of glitch feminism (Russell, 2020). The work aims to provoke discussion on postinternet identity and societal progression to help us question what happens when we finally break away in a world where the internet is slowly becoming “not a thing in the world to escape into, but rather the world we sought to escape from?” (McHugh, 2009).
